Squid invigorated The Invisible Wind Factory on the first stop of their current tour, and I had the pleasure of seeing it unfold live.

I have to admit, I was not well educated in the ‘Squid’ department prior to this gig. I have briefly listened to their new album ‘Cowards’ once then decided to leave it to them to show me how Squid sounds, and they did not disappoint. Their music ranged from rock, and psychedelic to instrumental and electronic. I was left not knowing what was coming next. Opening with their hit new single ‘Crispy Skin’ was a perfect introduction to an unpredictable performance. One song, I believe it was ‘The Blades’ but I could be wrong, continued the mystery when Squid performed exceptionally for 20 minutes straight (or more). Only they could keep you invested in a singular song for that long. Squid played a mixture of songs from their 3 albums, with the majority (8) being from their most recent, ‘Cowards’. Some songs had their dedicated audience jumping and singing whilst others had the entire audience mesmerised, transfixed on the beautifully lit stage.

We unfortunately only caught the very end of support artist Martha Skye Murphy, who actually has collaborated with Squid on a song previously. She has an incredibly unique sound, utilising her vocals to create atmospheric soundscapes. From what I heard, she sounded entrancing and had the audience entrapped by her sound. An acquired taste for sure but beautiful nonetheless.

This was my first visit to the Invisible Wind Factory and surely a good one. I am aware that this venue is often used to house raves and it certainly is catered well to that. With space for benches and other seating areas, a large bar and many a ceiling decoration, Invisible Wind Factory absolutely made a positive first impression on me. The Sound was incredible, the staff were lovely and it was relatively easy to find. It is one of the more difficult Liverpool venues to locate, especially walking but it was an enjoyable walk and we had no trouble finding it with a little Google Maps assistance.

I would recommend seeing Squid Live to Squid fans and anyone looking for the unexpected and mysterious. I was kept on my toes the whole time and would do it all again!
